On March 14th, 2018, Marshall participated in the National School Walkout, an event that occurred as a result of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Shooting on February 14th. Most NS Walkouts are supposed to last 17 minutes, that number representing the 17 dead victims of the shooting. The event is at 10 AM (in the timezone of whatever school is participating) and its goal is to push Congress to do something about the gun violence.

The Marshall walkout occurred outside the front of the school, where students could listen to the speeches of various kids wanting change. On March 11th, Dr. Anderson sent out an email to students’s PUSD account in case anyone wanted to help out with the event. If a student missed that email somehow, they could at least hold up some posters resting on a nearby table during the protest. Those holding the posters may show the signs to passing cars on the road.

Unfortunately, there were numerous students who only joined the event to get out of class. They thought they would have to walk somewhere, giving them an opportunity to ditch. Fortunately enough, there were many more kids who actually did about what was going on.

But of course, it takes more than just caring to fix this problem. We all have different solutions as to what to do about this, like doing something about America’s gun rights, adding security guards to schools, discriminating against the mentally ill (which is bad, BTW), etc.

At the very least, it’s not good to do nothing and completely forget about all this. After all, there was that one investigation at the nearby South Pasadena High School. Moreover, there was a rumor circulating around teachers and students alike that there was a threat to Marshall but the person making the threat was arrested. This would certainly be news, as Marshall doesn’t usually have this serious drama, except for the student-teacher relationship in 2016 and the drug brownies in 2017 (but we don’t talk about that).

But what do you feel would help the situation? What do you think should be done here?
